I’ve edited and/or contributed to over 20 medical textbooks, including:
The Textbook of Diabetes (Blackwell Scientific), edited by John Pickup and Gareth Williams. We devised this book and saw it through its first three editions (1991-2002). For a while, it was one of the leading big books about diabetes; the second edition won the Royal Society of Medicine’s Textbook Award and was the BMA’s Medical Book of the Year 1995.
The Handbook of Diabetes (Blackwell Scientific), by Gareth Williams and John Pickup. We wrote this condensed version of the Textbook and took it through three editions (1992-2004). It did pretty well and was translated into several languages, including Russian and Korean.
Obesity: science to practice (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009), edited by Gareth Williams and Gema Frühbeck. A big book covering all aspects of obesity, with chapters by internationally recognised leaders in the field.
I also wrote the chapter on diabetes for the fourth edition (2003) of the internationally acclaimed Oxford Textbook of Medicine (Oxford University Press); and with Colin Dayan, the same chapter for the fifth edition (2010).
